According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in 2024 approximately 12% of Indonesia's population was elderly (lansia) or aged 60 and above.

Of this elderly group, more than half, or 55.32%, were still working.

The percentage of Indonesian elderly working in 2024 increased to a new record high in the last decade, as shown in the graph.

BPS stated that there are many reasons that encourage the elderly to continue working, one of which is the necessity to meet their living needs.

Of all the elderly working in 2024, the majority, or 40.5%, had never attended school/did not finish primary school, and 37.6% were primary school graduates.

Then, 8.5% were junior high school graduates, 9.1% were senior high school/vocational school graduates, and 4.2% were tertiary education graduates.
