The Indonesian government has designated five national super-priority tourism destinations (DWSP).
These five DWSPs represent tourist destinations from western to eastern Indonesia: Lake Toba (North Sumatra), Borobudur (Central Java), Labuan Bajo (East Nusa Tenggara), Mandalika (West Nusa Tenggara), and Likupang (North Sulawesi).
According to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS), in 2023 there were 357 commercial tourist attractions in the national DWSP areas, receiving a total of 20.75 million visits.
This comprised 19.30 million domestic visitors and 1.45 million foreign visitors.
Borobudur was the DWSP with the highest number of visitors, reaching 18.64 million people throughout 2023.
It was followed by Mandalika with 1.49 million visitors; Lake Toba with 1.47 million visitors; Labuan Bajo with 376,000 visitors; and Likupang with 247,000 visitors.
"From an economic standpoint, the presence of tourist attraction businesses also drives job creation for local residents," wrote the BPS in its report, *Statistics of Tourist Attraction Objects 2023*.
In 2023, the five DWSP tourist attractions created jobs for 6,925 workers. Borobudur was the DWSP that absorbed the most labor, employing 4,694 people.
