The 2023 Indonesian Health Profile Report from the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) states that only 32.7% of Indonesians suffering from mental disorders received treatment at health facilities in 2023. This figure is far below the target of 60%.
Based on provinces, Jambi had the highest proportion, with 50.4% of sufferers in the province receiving treatment in 2023.
Banten followed with 46.7%, followed by Yogyakarta Special Region at 46%.
South Sulawesi was fourth with 43.4%, and Central Java fifth with 43.1%.
Conversely, the provinces with the lowest treatment rates for mental disorders were Papua Pegunungan (0.2%), followed by Central Papua (4%) and West Papua (5.5%).

The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) acknowledges the complex challenges in addressing this issue, ranging from treatment gaps to the reporting of mental disorder cases in the mental health information system.
"The treatment gap represents the difference between the prevalence of the disease and the proportion of affected individuals receiving treatment at health facilities," wrote Kemenkes in the report quoted on Tuesday (1/10/2024).
Kemenkes explained that this gap can be caused by predisposing factors, the availability of facilities, resources, and access, and driving factors from the social environment.
"The complexity of the factors causing this gap can be addressed by implementing the right strategies. This accuracy can be linked to data as a basis for scientific evidence," said Kemenkes.
However, Kemenkes noted that in practice, some primary health care facilities (FKTP) do not report mental disorder cases to the information system.
Therefore, Kemenkes stated that improving access to mental health services to reduce the treatment gap for mental disorders and improving data reporting by health workers are necessities that need to be fulfilled by health facilities throughout Indonesia to produce comprehensive and sustainable mental health services.
