According to a survey conducted by Populix and KitaLulus, 30% of 1,330 Indonesian job seekers admitted that their educational background did not match the jobs they applied for.

"This phenomenon is supported by the large number of companies that prioritize skills over educational background," wrote Populix in its report titled *Bridging the Gap: Understanding Job Mismatch in Today’s Workforce*.

Of this group, the majority (48%) applied for jobs outside their field of study because they enjoyed the work.

Another 44% did so because they possessed the necessary skills.

Furthermore, 27% applied for jobs unrelated to their education without a specific reason, simply to secure employment; 27% cited a lack of job openings in their field; and 17% continued in a previous job that was already in a different field.

The Populix and KitaLulus survey was conducted online in June 2024, involving 1,330 job seekers across Indonesia. 70% of respondents were located on Java Island, and 30% were outside Java.

The respondents comprised 64% male and 36% female. 66% were unemployed, and 34% were employed at the time of the survey.
