Yogyakarta, Province with the Highest National Consumption of Electronic Cigarettes in 2023

According to a survey by the Indonesian Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) in the 2023 Indonesian Health Survey (SKI) report, 22.46% of Indonesians aged 10 and over smoked daily in 2023. This figure is derived from a weighted sample (n) of 711,286 people.

Based on the type of cigarette, 3.2% of people consumed electronic cigarettes from a weighted sample (n) of 181,278 people.

D.I. Yogyakarta had the highest proportion of e-cigarette smokers, reaching 9.6% last year.

Meanwhile, Bengkulu had the lowest e-cigarette consumption at only 0.7%, followed by Maluku at 0.8% and Aceh at 0.9%.

The following is a list of the top 10 provinces with the highest number of e-cigarette users nationally:

1. DI Yogyakarta: 9.6%
2. Bali: 8.5%
3. East Kalimantan: 8.1%
4. Jakarta: 6.3%
5. South Kalimantan: 4.5%
6. North Kalimantan: 3.8%
7. West Java: 3.7%
8. Riau Islands: 3.6%
9. Banten: 3.4%
10. Central Java: 3.3%

Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases at the Ministry of Health, Eva Susanti, stated that the presence of electronic cigarettes or vapes poses a serious threat to the health of young people.

"Electronic cigarettes are not safe for children because they deliver nicotine and flavorings in aerosol form, which has 7,000 negative effects," said Eva, as quoted by Antaranews on Wednesday (5/3/2023).

According to her, electronic cigarettes have the same dangers as conventional cigarettes because they spread aerosols containing harmful substances.

The nicotine content in electronic cigarettes is said to have an addictive effect that triggers depression, headaches, tremors, and can cause lung damage.

"The important thing is to avoid electronic cigarettes because they have very bad effects on health," said Eva.
