The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus is spreading globally, reaching 655,880 cases by Sunday, January 30, 2022. Chile ranks first, with a weekly increase in Omicron cases growing by 434.86 percent. GISAID recorded 1,979 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 0.61 percent compared to the previous day.
Japan follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, the increase in Omicron cases in this country grew by 321.99 percent. Daily figures show a 0.36 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, totaling 6,711 cases.
Next is Trinidad and Tobago with a 54-case increase in Omicron cases (up 145.45%), followed by Guam with a 142.86 percent increase to 17 cases compared to the previous week, and Brazil with a 4,135-case increase (up 139.43%).
In Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 2,156, a 16.1 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since its first detection, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
