As of Friday, December 24, 2021, the Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus has been detected in 83 countries worldwide. GISAID recorded a total of 32,963 cases of this new coronavirus variant.

The United Kingdom remains the largest contributor to Omicron variant Covid-19 cases globally, with a total of 20,550 cases, representing approximately 62.34% of the global total of this coronavirus variant.

The United States ranks second with the highest number of Omicron variant Covid-19 cases worldwide, totaling 3,367 cases. Following this, South Africa is listed as the third country with the most Omicron cases, with 1,629 detected cases.

A study indicates that Omicron has a 5.4 times higher risk of reinfection than the Delta variant. This study was initiated by Imperial College London (ICL) based on data from the UK Health Security Agency and the National Health Service on individuals confirmed positive for Covid-19 in the UK between November 29 and December 11, 2021.

Therefore, the government continues to urge the public to remain vigilant and prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus, including this new coronavirus variant. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing a mask, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
