According to the Indonesian Ministry of Health's Indonesian Nutritional Status Survey (SSGI), the prevalence of stunting in Indonesia reached 21.6% in 2022. This is the lowest figure in the last decade.
The number of stunting cases in Indonesia has consistently decreased since 2013, as shown in the graph above.
Minister of Health Budi Gunadi Sadikin stated that several provinces successfully reduced stunting rates by approximately 5% in the 2021-2022 period, including:
* South Sumatra decreased from 24.8% to 18.6%
* North Kalimantan decreased from 27.5% to 22.1%
* South Kalimantan decreased from 30% to 24.6%
* Riau decreased from 22.3% to 17%
Two provinces also managed to reduce stunting rates by approximately 3% in the 2021-2022 period:
* West Java decreased from 24.5% to 20.2%
* East Java decreased from 23.5% to 19.2%
However, Budi said that this percentage cannot be the sole indicator in assessing the stunting condition.
"We also need a significant nominal decrease. For example, Papua and NTT have a high stunting percentage, but the actual number of children is smaller. However, in terms of the number of children, West Java has the largest number," said Budi, as quoted from Antara, Wednesday (25/1/2023).
Budi also stated that some provinces experienced an increase in stunting rates in 2022, but he did not specify which provinces.
The government aims to reduce the stunting rate to 14% by the end of 2024. To achieve this target, the government must strive for a 3.8% annual reduction in stunting rates.
According to Budi, two crucial intervention programs must be considered in stunting mitigation efforts. These include fulfilling the nutritional needs of pregnant women and children aged 6-24 months.
