The Indonesian Healthcare Social Security Agency (BPJS Kesehatan) reported a Social Security Fund (Dana Jaminan Sosial/DJS) surplus of Rp17.7 trillion in 2022.
This surplus increased the net DJS assets of BPJS Kesehatan by 45.8% year-on-year (yoy), from Rp38.76 trillion at the end of 2021 to Rp56.5 trillion at the end of 2022.
The Social Security Fund (DJS) is a trust fund belonging to all participants. It comprises contributions and their investment returns, managed by BPJS for benefit payments to participants and operational financing of the Social Security program.
The DJS surplus resulted from remaining income after deducting expenses. In 2022, BPJS Kesehatan recorded DJS revenue of Rp148.1 trillion and expenses of Rp130.4 trillion.
Although BPJS Kesehatan still achieved a surplus after years of deficits, the 2022 surplus decreased by 60% compared to 2021.
This decrease was influenced by expenses growing faster than revenue. In 2022, BPJS Kesehatan's DJS expenses increased by 28% (yoy), while revenue only increased by 1% (yoy).
