According to the 2022 Environmental Performance Index (EPI) report, India is the least environmentally friendly country globally.
The EPI measures the environmental sustainability of countries using dozens of indicators categorized into three main pillars:
* Environmental Health: Air quality, water pollution, waste management quality, and so on.
* Climate: Climate change mitigation policies, greenhouse gas emissions, and so on.
* Ecosystem Vitality: Biodiversity quality, sustainability of fisheries, agriculture, water resources, and so on.
The EPI data is sourced from international organizations, research institutions, academics, and government agencies. Most of the data has been third-party audited.
"Generally, we do not accept raw data from governments," the report states.
The EPI then processes the data related to the above indicators into a score on a scale of 0-100. The higher the score, the better the environmental sustainability, and vice versa.
India received a score of 18.9 out of 100, the lowest among the 180 countries researched.
"The lowest scores fall to countries experiencing civil unrest or other crises, such as Myanmar and Haiti, or countries that prioritize economic growth over environmental sustainability, such as India, Vietnam, Bangladesh, and Pakistan," the EPI report states.
"With extremely poor air quality and rapidly increasing greenhouse gas emissions, India has fallen to the bottom of the global rankings for the first time," they continued.
The following is a list of the 10 countries with the lowest environmental sustainability scores according to the 2022 EPI:
* India: 18.9
