Active Covid-19 cases in Indonesia are reportedly rising again. The Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 variants are suspected to be one of the causes of the increase in national active cases.
Based on a report from the Covid-19 Task Force, the number of active Covid-19 cases in Indonesia reached 5,298 cases as of June 14, 2022. This number is up 372 cases from the previous day.
DKI Jakarta recorded the highest number of active Covid-19 cases, namely 2,703 cases. This is equivalent to 51.01% of the total national active cases.
Next is West Java with 990 active cases, Banten with 456 cases, and Bali with 228 cases.
Then East Java and Central Java have active Covid-19 cases of 166 and 136 cases, respectively.
Yogyakarta, North Sumatra, and Papua are also included in the list of provinces with the highest number of national active Covid-19 cases, namely 135 cases, 53 cases, and 43 cases, respectively.
The total number of positive Covid-19 cases in Indonesia has reached 6,062,009 cases as of June 14, 2022. 2.58% of them died and 97.32% were reported to have recovered.
According to the Minister of Health (Menkes) Budi Gunadi Sadikin, a new virus variant wave usually peaks about a month after the first case is found.
"So, in the second or third week of July, we should see the peak of cases from BA.4 and BA.5," said the Minister of Health, as quoted from Kompas.com, Monday (13/6/2022).
According to the Ministry of Health's observations, the peak of transmission of BA.4 and BA.5 is about one-third of the Delta and Omicron peaks.
Patients with BA.4 and BA.5 hospitalized are also only one-third of Delta and Omicron cases. Meanwhile, the death rate from the BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants is one-tenth of the death rate from the two previous Corona virus variants.
However, Budi urged all parties to remain vigilant. He encouraged the public to immediately get a booster vaccination or third dose, and to continue wearing masks when in crowds or enclosed spaces.
