"The Super Mario Bros. Movie" was the highest-grossing film at the US Box Office in its opening week, surpassing all other films released between January and June 2023.
Data compiled from The Numbers shows that the animated film, adapted from the video game, earned US$204.63 million from 4,343 theaters in the US within a week.
"Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" came in second, earning US$120.6 million in a week. According to The Numbers, this sequel to "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" (2018) was one of the most anticipated films among fans.
In third place was Marvel Studio's "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3," which grossed US$118.41 million in a week. Also from Marvel Studios, "Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania" earned US$106.1 million in a week.
Fifth place went to Disney's live-action film, "The Little Mermaid," which raked in US$95.57 million in a week.
Before its release, the film sparked controversy due to the appearance of its main character, Ariel, played by Halle Bailey, who did not resemble the animated version of Ariel. However, "The Little Mermaid" still attracted large audiences and became one of the highest-grossing films in the US.
