Several countries impose high excise taxes on cigarettes. This is done to discourage cigarette consumption among their citizens. According to Numbeo data, a pack (20 cigarettes) of Marlboro cigarettes in Australia costs US$ 25.81, or approximately Rp 368,128 (using an exchange rate of US$ 1 = Rp 14,263). This makes Australia the country with the most expensive cigarettes in the world.

For the tobacco industry, excise increases are detrimental as they can reduce sales. For consumers, higher excise taxes mean smokers have to pay more.

Besides Australia, the next most expensive country for cigarettes is New Zealand, where a pack of 20 Marlboro cigarettes costs US$ 24.30. Ireland and Norway follow, with cigarette prices of US$ 16.23 and US$ 15.65 respectively.

In the United Kingdom, a pack of 20 Marlboro cigarettes costs US$ 15.43. Meanwhile, Canada, France, and Iceland sell 20 cigarettes for US$ 11.89, US$ 11.60, and US$ 11.57 respectively.

Israel and Singapore are also among the top 10 countries with the most expensive cigarettes in the world, at US$ 10.88 and US$ 10.32 respectively. Meanwhile, Indonesia ranks 100th, with cigarette prices at US$ 1.97, or approximately Rp 28,098.
