This week's Covid-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, 10 countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 14 others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Vietnam, Iran (Islamic Republic), Azerbaijan, India, and Hong Kong. The total number of deaths in these five countries for the week ending December 25, 2022, was 332, with a weekly growth rate exceeding 43.37 percent.
Vietnam recorded the highest increase in Covid-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 400 percent. Worldometer recorded five deaths in the country, an increase from the one death reported the previous week.
Iran (Islamic Republic) followed with a weekly growth in deaths reaching 300 percent. Daily death figures in the country decreased by 14.29% compared to the previous day, which recorded 14 deaths.
Furthermore, deaths in Azerbaijan increased by 85.71%, India recorded 21 deaths (a 50% increase), and deaths in Hong Kong increased by 43.37%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 1,932 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 22.67% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, South Korea recorded 391 deaths (up 20.68%), Hong Kong recorded 281 deaths (up 43.37%), Taiwan recorded 215 deaths (down 1.83%), and the Philippines recorded 181 deaths (up 1.69%).
The total number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days was 3,396. This accounts for 29.82 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, totaling 11,387. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 2,956 deaths.
