Jakarta, the capital city of Indonesia, is on high alert due to the continuously surging daily active Covid-19 cases. This includes a significant increase in active Covid-19 cases among children. According to the Covid-19 Task Force, children account for 14.1% of active Covid-19 cases in Jakarta.
This breaks down to 3.8% of cases in the 0-5 age group and 10.3% in the 6-18 age group. This figure is even higher than the percentage of cases among those aged 60 and above, which stands at 8.1%. Meanwhile, a higher proportion of cases is found in the productive age group. 28.9% of total active cases are in the 19-30 age group, and another 30.7% are in the 31-45 age group. Furthermore, 18.1% of cases are in the 46-59 age group.
On Thursday, June 17, 2021, Jakarta recorded the highest increase in Covid-19 cases in Indonesia, with 4,144 new cases. The Jakarta Provincial Health Office reported that 661 of these cases were in children, as cited by Kompas.
Of this number, 144 cases affected children under five years old, while the remaining 517 cases were among children aged 6-18 years old.
The transmission rate of the coronavirus remains high in the capital city. Therefore, the public must adhere to health protocols when engaging in outdoor activities. Wearing masks, maintaining physical distance, avoiding crowds, and washing hands with soap (the 3M protocol) can help suppress virus transmission.
