According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), in 2021 there were 27,607 accommodation providers throughout Indonesia, with a total of 718,898 available rooms.
This figure includes rooms in star-rated hotels, budget hotels (melati class), and other accommodation such as guesthouses, tourist lodges, villas, cottages, and others.
Overall, the majority of accommodation rooms are located in West Java.
The proportion of accommodation rooms in West Java reached almost 13% of the national total in 2021. This figure increased from 11.21% the previous year.
BPS also notes that accommodation businesses in West Java are mostly managed by independent parties and national hotel chains rather than international chains.
Meanwhile, the proportion of accommodation rooms in Bali decreased to 11% in 2021 from 11.85% the previous year. Accommodation providers in Bali are largely managed by international hotel chains.
The Covid-19 pandemic hit the accommodation industry in Bali harder than other provinces, as most of its guests come from abroad. The government only eased restrictions on foreign tourist visits this year.
BPS also reported that the number of accommodation providers nationwide decreased by 10.43% to 27,607 in 2021 from the previous year.
