This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, five countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while six others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Iran (Islamic Republic), India, Lebanon, Indonesia, and the Philippines. The total number of deaths in these five countries as of Wednesday, March 22, 2023, was 225, with a weekly growth rate exceeding 5.08 percent.
Iran (Islamic Republic) recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 124.49 percent. Worldometer recorded 110 deaths in the country, a 9.84 percent increase compared to the previous day.
India follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, deaths in the country grew by 111.11 percent. However, daily death figures decreased by 13.64% compared to the previous day, which recorded 22 deaths.
Next is Lebanon with 10 deaths (up 66.67%), Indonesia with a 26.32% increase in deaths, and the Philippines with 62 deaths (up 5.08%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan with 289 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 33.26% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, Iran (Islamic Republic) reported 110 deaths (up 124.49%), the Philippines recorded 62 deaths (up 5.08%), South Korea reported 57 deaths (down 20.83%), and Israel reported 29 deaths (down 14.71%).
A total of 609 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 20.53 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 2,966 deaths. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 696 deaths.
