This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas show a decline in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. Seven countries reported an increase in deaths this week, while nine others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the five countries with the highest increase in deaths were El Salvador, Paraguay, Colombia, Uruguay, and Peru. A total of 293 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Wednesday, September 14, 2022, representing a weekly growth of over 16.39 percent.
El Salvador had the highest increase, with weekly deaths growing by 200 percent. Worldometer recorded three deaths in the country, a 25 percent increase from the previous day.
Paraguay reported a 150 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. Daily data showed a 33.33 percent decrease in deaths compared to the previous day. Colombia saw a 63.16 percent increase in deaths, Uruguay recorded five deaths (a 25 percent increase), and Peru recorded 213 deaths (a 16.39 percent increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was in the United States, with 1,723 deaths—a 13.13 percent increase compared to the previous week. Brazil reported 411 deaths (a 43.85 percent decrease), Peru 213 deaths (a 16.39 percent increase), Chile 177 deaths (an 11.5 percent decrease), and Mexico 137 deaths (a 40.17 percent decrease).
A total of 3,014 deaths were recorded in the Americas over the past seven days. This accounts for 28.38 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 10,619. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 3,265 deaths.
