This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the death toll, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, five countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while seven others recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Afghanistan, Lebanon, India, Indonesia, and Israel. The total deaths in these five countries as of Monday, January 23, 2023, amounted to 122, with a weekly growth exceeding 15.62 percent.
Afghanistan ranks first, with a 300 percent weekly increase in deaths. In this country, Worldometer recorded eight deaths, a 20 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Next is Lebanon, which recorded 100 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. Daily data shows deaths in this country increased by 27.27% compared to the previous day. Then, India with nine deaths (up 80%), Indonesia with an increase of 22.73% in deaths, and Israel with 37 deaths (up 15.62%).
Looking at the number of death reports, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan with 2,690 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 5.85% compared to the previous week. Following that, South Korea reported 260 deaths (down 27.58%), the Philippines recorded 104 deaths (down 8.77%), Indonesia recorded 54 deaths (up 22.73%), and Thailand recorded 47 deaths (down 26.56%).
Total deaths in Asia over the past seven days were recorded at 3,271. This accounts for 35.88 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 9,116 deaths. The death toll in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 3,553 deaths.
