Luxembourg General Practitioners Have the Highest Salaries in the World

Doctors are known for their relatively high salaries. According to medicfootprints.org, Luxembourg had the highest average general practitioner salary globally in 2020, reaching US$278,900 per year. This is equivalent to approximately Rp 3.9 billion per year (using an exchange rate of Rp 14,176/US$).

The United States ranked second, with an average general practitioner salary of US$242,400 per year (Rp 3.4 billion per year). Germany followed, with an average general practitioner salary of US$214,700 per year (Rp 3.04 billion per year).

The average general practitioner salary in Switzerland was recorded at US$172,800 per year (Rp 2.44 billion per year). Ireland ranked fifth, with an average general practitioner salary of US$164,700 per year (Rp 2.33 billion per year).

The high salaries in these countries are largely due to the high cost of medical school. In the United States, for example, the average cost of medical school for domestic students in 2018 was US$34,500, or approximately Rp 489 million per year. For international students, the cost reached US$58,700, or approximately Rp 832 million per year.

In addition to high doctor salaries, hospitals in these countries are equipped with advanced medical technology. They also have comprehensive insurance systems and integrated healthcare services to provide free medical treatment to the public.
