This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, five countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while seven others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Iran (Islamic Republic), the Philippines, India, Indonesia, and Afghanistan. The total number of deaths in these five countries as of Wednesday, February 8, 2023, was 167, with a weekly growth rate exceeding 27.27 percent.
Iran (Islamic Republic) recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 137.5 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded 19 deaths, an 11.76 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Next is the Philippines, which recorded 81.13 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. Daily data shows deaths in this country increased by 6.67% compared to the previous day. Meanwhile, deaths in India increased by 66.67%, Indonesia by 33 (up 57.14%), and Afghanistan by 27.27%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan, with 1,671 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 22.71% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, South Korea recorded 180 deaths (down 9.55%), the Philippines 96 deaths (up 81.13%), Indonesia 33 deaths (up 57.14%), and Israel 29 deaths (down 21.62%).
A total of 2,084 deaths were recorded in Asia over the past seven days. This accounts for 33.85 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 6,157 deaths. The number of deaths in Asia decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 2,554 deaths.
