The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) reports that the national average treatment rate for drug-resistant tuberculosis (TBRO) in 2023 was 73%.
TBRO is a condition where a person is infected with tuberculosis bacteria but is resistant to first-line TB drugs, requiring treatment with second-line TB drugs for a longer duration of 9-24 months.
"For TBRO, the enrollment target is 90%, and only one province achieved it, namely Yogyakarta," said Director of Prevention and Control of Infectious Diseases at Kemenkes, Imaran Pambudi, in an online press conference on Friday (22/3/2024).
The realization of treated TBRO cases in Yogyakarta reached 92% this year. It is followed by Bali and Aceh, both with 88%.
Meanwhile, the lowest achievement in TBRO treatment nationwide was in Papua Pegunungan at 45%, followed by West Papua at 49% and North Maluku at 51%.
The following are the 10 provinces with the highest percentage of treated TBRO cases nationally in 2023:
1. D.I. Yogyakarta: 92%
2. Bali: 88%
3. Aceh: 88%
4. Bangka Belitung Islands: 87%
5. Riau Islands: 85%
6. West Sulawesi: 84%
7. Central Java: 82%
8. West Sumatra: 81%
9. South Sulawesi: 80%
10. Jakarta: 78%
Furthermore, Imran mentioned that the target for successful TBRO patient treatment in 2023 was 80%. However, the national average achievement was only 55%.
"Because some treatments are quite long, even up to 2 years, no province could reach the 80% success rate target," said Imran.
