This week's Covid-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to the continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, eight countries recorded an increase in deaths, while six others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Honduras, Uruguay, Paraguay, Mexico, and Colombia. The total deaths in these five countries as of Saturday, December 31, 2022, amounted to 284, with a weekly growth exceeding 28.75 percent.
Honduras ranks first, with a weekly increase in deaths growing by 166.67 percent. In this country, Worldometer recorded eight deaths, an increase compared to the previous week's reported three deaths.
Next is Uruguay, which recorded 150 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. The number of deaths in this country was reported as 10, higher than the four deaths recorded the previous week. Paraguay recorded 22 deaths (up 100%), Mexico 141 deaths (up 54.95%), and Colombia saw a 28.75% increase in deaths.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in the United States, with 1,409 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 36.39% compared to the previous week. Following this, Brazil reported the highest number with 1,050 deaths (down 2.6%), Peru with 171 deaths (down 3.39%), Chile with 161 deaths (down 3.01%), and Mexico recorded 141 deaths (up 54.95%).
Total deaths in the Americas over the past seven days were recorded at 3,278. This accounts for 31.51 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, totaling 10,403. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 4,020 deaths.
