According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics (PCBS), hospitals in Palestine are divided into two categories: government and private (non-government) hospitals.
PCBS data from 2020 shows a total of 87 hospitals in Palestine: 28 government hospitals and 59 private hospitals.
The bed ratio is 1.3 per 1,000 inhabitants, meaning there is only one hospital bed for every 1,000 people. While low, this ratio exceeds the World Health Organization (WHO) standard of 1 bed per 1,000 inhabitants.
In the West Bank, there are 53 hospitals: 15 government and 38 private. The bed ratio is 1.3 per 1,000 inhabitants.
In the Gaza Strip, there are 34 hospitals: 13 government and 21 private. The bed ratio is lower, at 1.2 per 1,000 inhabitants.
According to *Berita Satu*, an Indonesian hospital located in Beit Lahia, Northern Gaza Strip, was among the buildings struck by Israeli forces last Saturday. The attack resulted in the death of one Palestinian hospital staff member.
Conditions in several hospitals are deteriorating. Journalist Youmna ElSayed of *Al-Jazeera* reported panic at Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City. Healthcare workers and relatives were overwhelmed transporting casualties.
“Some families have already started taking their relatives to empty the morgue. No burials are being held due to the intensity of the bombing (from Israel),” said the journalist in a report on Wednesday, November 10, 2023.
The Israeli blockade of Palestine is exacerbating the situation. Staff at Al-Shifa reported shortages of medicine, supplies, and equipment, while power outages are worsening the crisis.
“Gaza has only received electricity for four hours in the last two days,” ElSayed reported. “The only power plant here can only operate for a maximum of two more days after that,” she added.
Israel has been attacking Palestine since October 8, 2023, claiming it as retaliation for attacks by Palestinian militants from Hamas on October 7, 2023.
*Financial Times* reported a death toll of 1,200 in Israel and 950 in Palestine as of Wednesday, October 11, 2023.
