This week's Covid-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Ten countries recorded increased deaths this week, while eight others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Ecuador, El Salvador, Uruguay, Trinidad and Tobago, and Chile. A total of 327 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Saturday, August 27, 2022, representing a weekly growth exceeding 35.61 percent.
Ecuador ranks first, with a 1,100 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded 12 deaths in the country, up from just one the previous week.
El Salvador follows with a 300 percent weekly increase in deaths. Four deaths were reported, compared to one the previous week.
Rounding out the top five, Uruguay saw a 200% increase in deaths, Trinidad and Tobago recorded 30 deaths (a 42.86% increase), and Chile recorded 278 deaths (a 35.61% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest seven-day death toll in the Americas occurred in the United States, with 2,228 deaths. This represents a 6.5% decrease compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 1,052 deaths (down 7.72%), Mexico 354 deaths (up 0.85%), Peru 305 deaths (down 4.39%), and Chile 278 deaths (up 35.61%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 4,640. This accounts for 33.33 percent of global Covid-19 deaths, totaling 13,923. The death toll in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 5,110 deaths.
