The main purposes of travel can be classified into two groups: personal and business.
According to data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), the majority of domestic tourists (wisnas) traveling abroad have personal reasons (75.46%), while a smaller portion travel for business purposes (24.54%).
Vacationing is the main reason for domestic tourists traveling abroad, with a percentage of 50.88%. BPS also mentions that "revenge travel" is a motivation for these tourists to go on vacation.
"Revenge travel is a tourism phenomenon where people travel as a form of compensation for the travel restrictions imposed during the Covid-19 pandemic," writes BPS in its report.
The reopening of international flights at several airports and the easing of entry access for foreign tourists have also contributed to the high percentage of domestic tourists traveling for leisure.
Attending Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions (MICE) is the second most common reason for domestic tourists traveling abroad, at 12.04%.
"ASEAN countries, such as Singapore and Malaysia, are generally the destinations for leisure and MICE purposes," explains BPS.
There are also those who go abroad for professional reasons, religious purposes, to visit friends or family, for training, or for health and beauty treatments, with proportions as shown in the graph.
