The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.81 million cases by Tuesday, September 13, 2022. Russia recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with weekly growth reaching 21.42 percent. GISAID recorded 9,154 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 9.98 percent compared to the previous day.
Cuba followed in second place. Compared to the previous week, Omicron cases in the country grew by 17.04 percent. The daily increase in Omicron cases in the country rose by 17.04 percent compared to the previous day, which recorded 399 cases.
Furthermore, the increase in Omicron cases in Ukraine rose by 16.83 percent to 465 cases compared to the previous week; in Iceland, the increase was 11.37 percent, reaching 1,322 cases compared to the previous week; and in Ecuador, there were 3,620 additional Omicron cases (up 7.83%).
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 21,388, a 0.43 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
