The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) reports that Lampung has the highest COVID-19 case fatality rate (CFR) in Indonesia. The province recorded a 7.8% death rate between March 2, 2020, and January 22, 2022.
East Java is second with a COVID-19 death rate of 7.4%, followed by Central Java with a 6.2% death rate.
Next, Aceh and South Sumatra had COVID-19 death rates of 5.4% and 5.1%, respectively. Gorontalo follows with a COVID-19 death rate of 3.9%.
Nationally, Indonesia's death rate is 3.4%. Of the 34 provinces, only 7 have a COVID-19 death rate above the national average.
Furthermore, Kemenkes also notes that the COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesia continues to worsen. The number of new daily COVID-19 infections reached 3,205 on January 22, 2022.
The increase in daily cases coincides with the increasing spread of the new Omicron variant domestically. The total number of cases reached 4,283,453, with 4,122,555 patients declared recovered and 144,206 deaths.
The government continues to urge the importance of following health protocols during the pandemic. The public is encouraged to regularly wash their hands with soap and running water, wear masks, and maintain physical distancing to curb the transmission of COVID-19 and reduce the death toll from the virus.
