Elderly people (Lansia) are one of the groups most vulnerable to fatal risks from Covid-19. However, until now, many elderly people have not yet received the Covid-19 vaccination.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), as of December 2021, there were approximately 29.3 million elderly people in Indonesia. But according to the records of the Ministry of Health (Kemenkes), until February 13, 2022, the elderly vaccination coverage reached only 73.89% for the first dose and 50.38% for the second dose.
Based on this data, it is estimated that there are still around 7.6 million elderly people in Indonesia who have not received any Covid-19 vaccination at all.
Highest Covid-19 Vaccination Rate for the Elderly in Jakarta, Lowest in Papua
Based on provinces, only four provinces have achieved over 60% complete Covid-19 vaccination coverage for the elderly.
DKI Jakarta ranks highest as the province with the highest complete Covid-19 vaccination rate for the elderly, reaching 94.75%.
Yogyakarta follows with 74.68% of its elderly population having received the complete vaccine doses. This is followed by Bali and Riau Islands at 74.27% and 68.42% respectively.
Meanwhile, the lowest coverage of complete Covid-19 vaccination doses for the elderly is in Papua, at only 10.78%. This is followed by West Papua at 20.57% and North Maluku at 25.17%.
Amidst the current Omicron variant transmission wave, vaccination coverage needs to be further increased to optimize the protection of the elderly group from fatal Covid-19 risks.
