Side Businesses, the Main Thing Prepared by Indonesian Citizens for Retirement

According to a survey by Kompas Research and Development, there are various efforts made by Indonesian society to face retirement.

The main effort is to prepare a side business or job, chosen by 38.4% of respondents.

"This finding can be interpreted in the context that life after retirement cannot solely depend on passive income from asset accumulation and investments," said the Kompas Research and Development team in their report, Sunday (1/3/2026).

Then, 19.7% of respondents chose to participate in non-BPJS or non-mandatory old-age savings or insurance programs; and 18.1% invested their income in stocks, mutual funds, deposits, or property.

There are also those who prepare for retirement by paying the mandatory JHT BPJS Employment insurance premium (13.6%); preparing a residence in a more affordable location (8.8%); and paying the mandatory pension premiums of institutions such as civil servants/police/TNI (3.4%).

On the other hand, there are 25.2% of respondents who have not prepared for their retirement needs.

This survey involved 528 respondents from 72 cities in 38 provinces, randomly selected according to the proportion of residents in each province.

The survey used multiple-answer options, so respondents could choose more than one answer.

Data collection was conducted on September 8-12, 2025 through telephone interviews. The survey's margin of error is +/- 4.22% and the confidence level is 95%, under the condition of simple random sampling.
