This week's Covid-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation, with high death tolls remaining in most countries. Ten countries recorded increased deaths this week, while five others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador, Uruguay, Paraguay, and Canada. The total deaths in these five countries as of Wednesday, August 24, 2022, amounted to 277, with a weekly growth exceeding 61.54 percent.
Trinidad and Tobago recorded the highest increase in Covid-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 160 percent. Worldometer recorded 26 deaths in this country, an increase compared to the previous week's reported 10 deaths.
Next is El Salvador, which recorded a 100 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. The number of deaths in this country was reported as two, higher than the one death recorded the previous week. Deaths in Uruguay increased by 100%, deaths in Paraguay increased by 92.59%, and Canada recorded 189 deaths (a 61.54% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest seven-day death toll in the Americas occurred in the United States, with 2,046 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 6.34% compared to the previous week. Following this, Brazil reported 1,041 deaths (down 15.37%), Mexico reported 359 deaths (down 8.88%), Peru reported 314 deaths (up 8.65%), and Chile reported 213 deaths (up 13.3%).
Total deaths in the Americas over the past seven days reached 4,503. This accounts for 33.36 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, totaling 13,497. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 4,459.
