The foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) outbreak affecting livestock has spread to numerous regions in Indonesia.
"As of May 17, 2022, the FMD outbreak has spread across 15 provinces and 52 regencies/cities," said Minister of Agriculture Syahrul Yasin Limpo in a Hearing Meeting (RDP) with Commission IV of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Monday (May 23, 2022).
East Java remains the province with the highest number of livestock affected by the FMD outbreak, reaching 1,941,131 head as of May 17, 2022.
Central Java is second, with 689,319 affected livestock.
Following are West Nusa Tenggara and North Sumatra, with affected livestock populations of 363,770 and 346,179 head, respectively.
Other affected provinces are West Java with 165,468 head of livestock, West Sumatra 151,660 head, South Kalimantan 71,831 head, and Yogyakarta Special Region 56,490 head.
Furthermore, Aceh has 47,802 head, Central Kalimantan 25,993 head, Lampung 24,175 head, West Kalimantan 14,186 head, Bangka Belitung 10,347 head, South Sumatra 1,281 head, and Banten 678 head.
According to the Minister of Agriculture, the total livestock population in those 15 provinces is 13.8 million head. The total number of livestock affected by the outbreak is 3.9 million head.
Of all the affected animals, 13,965 head, or 0.36%, tested positive for FMD based on PCR laboratory test results.
Of the total infected animals, 2,630 head, or 18.83%, have recovered, while 99 head, or 0.71%, have died.
The Minister of Agriculture stated that his office has been promoting FMD handling efforts, including restricting livestock movement, distributing medicine and vitamins to farmers, providing vaccines, and providing FMD handling training to animal health workers.
