In 2022, the fast-food restaurant company McDonald's (McD) had approximately 40,300 restaurants spread across 115 countries.
The United States (US) had the highest number of McD restaurants, with approximately 13,400 units.
Many restaurants are also located in China, Japan, France, Canada, Germany, the United Kingdom, Brazil, Australia, and the Philippines, with details as shown in the graph.
Meanwhile, the number of McD restaurants in Indonesia in 2022 reached 279 units, ranking 21st globally.
Starting at the end of March 2023, McD temporarily closed its US offices and reportedly plans to conduct layoffs as part of a company restructuring.
"On April 3, 2023, we will announce important decisions regarding roles and staffing levels across the organization," said McD management, as reported by Reuters on Monday (April 3, 2023).
This layoff plan emerged after McD's profits fell last year. Throughout 2022, they recorded a net profit of approximately USD 6.2 billion, an 18% decrease year-on-year (yoy).
According to a report on its official website, McD will close 400 restaurants throughout 2023. However, this year they also plan to open 1,900 new restaurants in various countries.
McD management has not provided details on the locations of the restaurant closures and openings.
