This week's COVID-19 statistics in Asia show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous period where death tolls continued to rise. This week, five countries still recorded an increase in deaths, while 17 others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Hong Kong, Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Japan, and Thailand. The total deaths in these five countries as of Thursday, December 15, 2022, amounted to 1,778, with a weekly growth rate exceeding 1.9 percent.
Hong Kong recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in Asia, with weekly growth reaching 64.1 percent. Worldometer recorded 192 deaths in the country, a 7.26 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Next is Afghanistan, which recorded 50 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. However, daily data shows a 14.29% decrease in deaths compared to the previous day. Deaths in Azerbaijan increased by 25%, Japan recorded 1,468 deaths (up 24.94%), and Thailand recorded 107 deaths (up 1.9%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Asia occurred in Japan with 1,468 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 24.94% compared to the previous week. Following Japan, South Korea reported 327 deaths (down 4.11%), Taiwan reported 211 deaths (down 1.4%), Indonesia reported 199 deaths (down 29.43%), and Hong Kong reported 192 deaths (up 64.1%).
The total number of deaths in Asia over the past seven days was 2,792. This accounts for 30.49 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, which totaled 9,156. The number of deaths in Asia increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 2,581 deaths.
