What Activities Do People Usually Do on Mother's Day?

Mother's Day in Indonesia is commemorated every December 22nd. This day is a special occasion to honor and appreciate the role of mothers within the family and their surrounding communities.

So, what traditions or activities do Indonesians typically engage in to celebrate Mother's Day?

According to a survey by the Kurious-Katadata Insight Center (KIC), the majority, or 38.1% of respondents, said giving special gifts is a common activity to commemorate Mother's Day.

Furthermore, 34% of respondents expressed their gratitude through letters, WhatsApp messages, or phone calls to their mothers while celebrating this special day.

Another 29% of respondents said they cooked together on Mother's Day. This was followed by activities such as going for a walk or picnic together (28.1%), enjoying culinary tourism together (28%), shopping together (23%), throwing a surprise party for their mothers (19.6%), and exercising together (8.9%).

Meanwhile, 2.4% of respondents said they did other activities on Mother's Day. The remaining 19% of respondents admitted to not engaging in any traditions or activities on Mother's Day.

The Kurious-KIC survey involved 2,235 respondents spread across Indonesia, comprising 55.4% female respondents and 44.6% male respondents.

The majority of respondents were from Java outside of Jakarta (64.3%), followed by respondents in DKI Jakarta (16.4%), and Sumatra (13.5%). The proportion of respondents from Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Bali-Nusa Tenggara, and Maluku-Papua ranged from 0.2-3%.

Data collection was conducted from November 18-22, 2023, using the computer-assisted web interviewing (CAWI) method, with a margin of error of approximately 2.07% and a 95% confidence level.
