The Indonesian Survey Scale (SSI) released the results of a survey on the most popular music genres among Indonesians in 2022. The survey shows that dangdut is the most preferred music genre in Indonesia, with a percentage of 58.1%.
Dangdut itself is a popular music genre in Indonesia, which experienced rapid growth in the 1960s. At that time, dangdut was better known as 'Orkes Melayu'.
The SSI survey also shows that the largest number of dangdut fans are those with the highest level of education—elementary school (SD)—with a percentage of 67.3%.
When ranked by education level, dangdut lovers include those who have not completed/completed elementary school (67.3%), completed junior high school (62.8%), completed high school (45.8%), and higher education (28.1%). This data indicates that the higher a person's education level, the less their preference for dangdut.
Besides dangdut, the second most popular music genre in Indonesia is pop music, with a percentage of 31.3%. Regional music is in third place with 3.9%.
Next, keroncong music occupies the fourth position of the most popular music genres in Indonesia with a percentage of 2.6%. Following that is kasidah (religious) music with 1.2%, jazz with 0.4%, and rock with 0.3%.
