According to the Ministry of Health's data, in 2023, 22.46% of the Indonesian population aged 10 and above smoked daily, and 4.56% smoked occasionally.
These smokers typically consumed cigarettes with an average price of Rp19,960 per pack. This figure is the national average for kretek cigarettes, white cigarettes, and hand-rolled cigarettes.
The Ministry of Health also recorded that smokers aged 5-14 consumed cigarettes with an average price of around Rp18,000 per pack.
Smokers aged 15-24, 25-34, and 35-44 years old, on average, spent over Rp20,000 per pack on cigarettes.
Meanwhile, older smokers consumed cheaper cigarettes, ranging from Rp14,000 to Rp19,000 per pack, as shown in the graph.
The Indonesian government has increased excise duties on tobacco products (CHT) for two consecutive years in 2023 and 2024.
The excise duty was increased by an average of 10% per year with the aim of reducing the prevalence of smoking.
"We are increasing cigarette excise duties, which causes cigarette prices to rise, so the affordability of cigarettes will also decrease. Therefore, it is hoped that consumption will decrease," said Finance Minister Sri Mulyani when she first announced this policy on November 4, 2022.
