This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas show a decline in deaths in most countries, a reversal from the previous trend of continuous increases. This week, two countries reported an increase in deaths, while four others reported fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths were Brazil, Guatemala, the United States, Chile, and Peru. The total deaths in these five countries as of Tuesday, February 28, 2023, were 2,038, with a weekly growth rate above -17.33 percent.
Brazil ranked first, with a weekly increase in deaths of 236.49 percent. Worldometer recorded 959 deaths in the country, an 8.12 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Next is Guatemala, which recorded a 57.14 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. The number of deaths in this country was reported as 11, higher than the seven deaths recorded the previous week. Deaths in the United States decreased by 12.08%, deaths in Chile decreased by 16.85%, and deaths in Peru decreased by 17.33%.
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in Brazil, with 959 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 236.49% compared to the previous week. Following Brazil, the United States recorded 932 deaths (down 12.08%), Mexico recorded 147 deaths (down 43.24%), Chile recorded 74 deaths (down 16.85%), and Peru recorded 62 deaths (down 17.33%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 2,185. This accounts for 45.26 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 4,828. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 1,775 deaths.
