This week's Covid-19 statistics in Africa show that most countries have recorded a decrease in the number of deaths, a reversal from the previous situation where death tolls continued to rise. This week, seven countries still recorded an increase in deaths, and 10 other countries recorded deaths but in smaller numbers.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Ghana, Rwanda, Tunisia, Botswana, and Mozambique. The total deaths in these five countries as of Tuesday, July 19, 2022, were 36, with weekly growth exceeding 100 percent.
Ghana ranks first, with a 200 percent increase in weekly deaths. In this country, Worldometer recorded three deaths, an increase compared to the previous week's reported one death.
Rwanda follows with a 200 percent weekly growth in deaths. The number of deaths in this country was reported as three, compared to one the previous week.
Other countries in the top five include Tunisia with 21 deaths (up 162.5%), Botswana with seven deaths (up 133.33%), and Mozambique with two deaths (up 100%).
Looking at the number of death reports, the highest number of deaths in the last seven days in Africa occurred in South Africa with 42 deaths. Death reports in this country decreased by 35.38% compared to the previous week. Following that, Morocco reported the second highest number of deaths with 28 (down 24.32%), Tunisia with 21 deaths (up 162.5%), Ethiopia with nine deaths (down 10%), and Botswana with seven deaths (up 133.33%).
Total deaths in Africa over the last seven days were recorded at 129. This accounts for 1.21 percent of global deaths caused by the Covid-19 virus, totaling 10,644. The number of deaths in Africa decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 168 deaths.
