The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 4.94 million cases by Thursday, November 17, 2022. According to GISAID data, Réunion Island recorded the highest increase in Omicron cases, with 7,832 new cases. This represents 0.16 percent of the total global Omicron cases.
Next is Peru, which recorded a 3.7 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous week. Daily data shows a 0.87 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day.
Following this are Algeria with 302 additional Omicron cases (a 3.42% increase), Indonesia with 27,085 additional Omicron cases (a 3.25% increase), and Malaysia with a 2.66 percent increase in Omicron cases, totaling 21,947 cases compared to the previous week.
As for Indonesia, the addition of 27,085 Omicron cases today represents a 1.46 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, the number of Omicron cases in Indonesia has continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant in the face of the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
