This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, due to the continued increase in the number of deaths. This week, 10 countries recorded an increase in deaths, while eight others recorded fewer deaths than the previous week.
In terms of percentage, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Honduras, Colombia, Argentina, Suriname, and Paraguay. The total deaths in these five countries as of Thursday, July 21, 2022, amounted to 118, with a weekly growth exceeding 66.67 percent.
Honduras recorded the highest increase in COVID-19 deaths in the Americas, with weekly growth reaching 600 percent. Worldometer recorded seven deaths in the country, an increase compared to the previous week's single death.
Next is Colombia, which recorded 145 percent more deaths compared to the previous week. The number of deaths in this country was reported as 49, higher than the 20 recorded the previous week. Argentina reported 40 deaths (up 100%), Suriname two deaths (up 100%), and Paraguay 20 deaths (up 66.67%).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days occurred in Brazil, with 1,763 deaths. Death reports in this country increased by 2.2% compared to the previous week. Following Brazil, the United States reported 1,753 deaths (down 20.43%), Mexico 426 deaths (up 32.71%), Chile 262 deaths (up 11.49%), and Peru 156 deaths (up 31.09%).
The total number of deaths in the Americas over the past seven days was 4,749. This accounts for 42.88 percent of global deaths caused by the COVID-19 virus, totaling 11,074. The number of deaths in the Americas decreased compared to the previous seven-day accumulation of 5,010.
