The Ministry of Health reported 14 suspected cases of acute hepatitis in Indonesia as of May 17, 2022. The majority, seven cases, affected children under five years old.
Five cases involved children aged 11-16 years, while two cases were reported in children aged 6-10 years.
Of the 14 patients, six died. The deceased children were aged 2 months, 8 months, 9 months, 1 year, 8 years, and 14 months. Four patients are still hospitalized, and four have been discharged or recovered.
The Director of Sulianti Saroso Infectious Disease Hospital (RSPI), Mohammad Syahril, stated that the symptoms of suspected acute hepatitis cases in Indonesia and the UK differ slightly. In the UK, the majority of symptoms were jaundice and vomiting, followed by changes in stool color, lethargy, acute diarrhea, abdominal pain, nausea, fever, and respiratory symptoms.
In Indonesia, the most prominent symptoms were fever and loss of appetite, followed by vomiting, nausea, jaundice, changes in urine color, abdominal pain, acute diarrhea, lethargy, myalgia, shortness of breath, changes in stool color, and itching.
To prevent the spread of acute hepatitis in children, the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI) urges the public to take preventive measures, including handwashing, consuming clean and cooked water and food, and properly disposing of feces and disposable diapers. Using individual eating utensils, wearing masks, and maintaining physical distance are also recommended.
