The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) reported 351,936 cases of tuberculosis (TB) detected in Indonesia in 2020. This figure represents a 38% decrease from the previous year, which recorded 568,987 cases.
The majority of TB sufferers are of working age. Specifically, 17.3% of TB sufferers were aged 45-54 years. 16.8% were aged 25-34 years.
Furthermore, 16.7% of TB sufferers were aged 15-24 years. 16.3% were aged 35-44 years. 14.6% were aged 55-64 years.
Those aged 0-14 years (not yet of working age) accounted for 9.3% of TB sufferers. Meanwhile, 9% of TB sufferers were over 65 years old (no longer of working age).
Based on gender, males were more infected with TB, totaling 203,243 individuals. Females accounted for 148,693 cases.
Furthermore, Kemenkes noted a declining trend in the success rate of TB treatment since 2016. Most recently, the success rate of TB treatment was 82.7% in 2020, lower than the previous year's 82.9%.
In addition, TB treatment has not yet reached the national target set in Kemenkes' strategic plan (renstra) of 90%. This indicates a need for the government to improve healthcare services for TB treatment.
