This week's COVID-19 statistics in the Americas still depict a concerning situation compared to the previous week, with the death toll continuing to rise. Eleven countries recorded an increase in deaths this week, while seven others saw a decrease in the number of deaths.
In terms of percentage increase, the top five countries with the highest increase in deaths are Honduras, Suriname, Argentina, Mexico, and Panama. A total of 550 deaths were recorded in these five countries as of Friday, July 22, 2022, representing a weekly growth exceeding 50 percent.
Honduras ranks first, with a 1,700 percent increase in weekly deaths. Worldometer recorded 18 deaths in the country, a 157.14 percent increase compared to the previous day.
Suriname follows in second place, with a 100 percent increase in deaths compared to the previous week. Two deaths were reported, compared to one the previous week.
Rounding out the top five are Argentina with 24 deaths (a 60% increase), Mexico with a 51.05% increase in deaths, and Panama with three deaths (a 50% increase).
Looking at the number of reported deaths, the highest seven-day death toll in the Americas was recorded in the United States, with 2,070 deaths. This represents a 2.82% decrease compared to the previous week. Following the US, Brazil recorded 1,705 deaths (a 0.87% decrease), Mexico 503 deaths (a 51.05% increase), Chile 261 deaths (a 9.66% increase), and Colombia 238 deaths (a 46.01% increase).
A total of 5,249 deaths were recorded in the Americas over the past seven days. This accounts for 41.99 percent of global COVID-19 deaths, totaling 12,501. The number of deaths in the Americas increased compared to the previous seven-day period, which recorded 4,993 deaths.
