The Omicron (B.1.1.529) variant of the Covid-19 virus continues to spread globally, reaching 5.43 million cases by Wednesday, September 28, 2022. Malawi ranks first, with a weekly increase in Omicron cases growing by 34.73 percent. GISAID recorded 225 new Omicron cases in the country. Daily cases in this region increased by 34.73 percent compared to the previous day.
Russia follows in second place. Compared to the previous week, the increase in Omicron cases in the country grew by 27.93 percent. Daily data shows a 2.72 percent increase in Omicron cases compared to the previous day, totaling 12,685 cases.
Next is the Dominican Republic with an increase of 628 Omicron cases (up 15.23 percent). Omicron cases in Morocco increased by 14.61 percent to 502 cases compared to the previous week, and in Réunion, Omicron cases increased by 9.26 percent to 7,243 cases compared to the previous week.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, the number of Omicron cases reached 22,763, a 0.42 percent increase compared to the previous day. Since it was first monitored, Omicron cases in Indonesia have continued to rise.
The Ministry of Health (Kemenkes) urges everyone to remain vigilant against the global surge in Omicron cases. The public is urged to consistently adhere to the 3M health protocols: wearing masks, maintaining distance, and washing hands.
