According to Numbeo's Cost of Living Index, Indonesia had the lowest cost of living in ASEAN during the first half of 2022.
Numbeo compiled this index by comparing the average cost of living in New York City, USA, with the average cost of living in other cities worldwide.
The cost of living included in this index covers the prices of consumer goods such as food, clothing, taxi fares, electricity, water, gasoline, internet tariffs, and apartment rental prices.
Numbeo uses New York City as a baseline with an index of 100. A country with an index of 80, for example, means its cost of living is 20% lower than New York City's.
Using this method, Singapore had the highest cost of living in ASEAN, with an index of 72.43. This means the cost of living in Singapore is only 27.57% cheaper than in New York City.
Indonesia, on the other hand, had an index of 20.78. This means the cost of living in Indonesia is 79.22% cheaper than in New York City, making it the cheapest in ASEAN. Note that Laos was not included in this list due to a lack of data.
Indonesia's cost of living also ranked 32nd out of 43 Asian countries and 105th out of 137 countries surveyed worldwide. This indicates that Indonesia's cost of living is relatively low on a global scale.
