Taste Atlas' 10 Best Fried Chicken Dishes in the World, Featuring an Indonesian Dish!

The global culinary guide website, Taste Atlas, released a list of the 10 best-rated fried chicken dishes in the world in August 2023. The list includes several Indonesian dishes, among them, fried chicken, which scored 4.7 out of 5 points. This score placed Indonesian fried chicken second in the ranking of the world's best fried chicken dishes according to Taste Atlas.

Authentic Indonesian fried chicken consists of pieces of chicken marinated and briefly boiled before being fried until golden brown and crispy. "Typically, the marinade uses traditional spices such as lemongrass, galangal, turmeric, and tamarind," Taste Atlas wrote in its report.

In addition to fried chicken, Ayam Penyet, a dish originating from East Java, Indonesia, also ranked sixth on Taste Atlas's list of the world's best fried chicken dishes, receiving a score of 4.5 points. "The word 'penyet' in the dish's name means 'to press' or 'to push,' referring to the preparation method where the chicken is pressed with a pestle to make the meat more tender," Taste Atlas explained. Ayam Penyet is typically served with sambal (chili sauce), rice, vegetables, tempeh, and tofu.

First place in the ranking of the world's best fried chicken dishes was taken by Karaage, a Japanese breaded chicken dish, which scored 4.7 points. Taste Atlas explains that Karaage is a Japanese cooking technique where the meat is coated in flour and then deep-fried to create a crispy exterior.
