Indonesia's Top 5 Cotton-Producing Provinces

The Ministry of Agriculture (Kementan) reported that national cotton production in 2020 amounted to 127 tons, cultivated on 703 hectares. This figure represents a 54.6% decrease compared to the previous year's 280 tons produced from 1,620 hectares.

East Nusa Tenggara was the largest cotton-producing province in 2020, with a production of 70 tons from 147 hectares. Central Java followed with 21 tons from 131 hectares, and East Java with 15 tons.

Indonesia's cotton exports totaled 40,353 tons in 2019, a 41.8% increase from 28,460 tons the previous year. The export value reached US$ 47,315, a 29.7% increase compared to US$ 36,488 in the previous year.

Meanwhile, the volume and value of cotton imports were significantly higher than exports. In 2019, cotton imports reached 631,993 tons, valued at US$ 1.13 million.

The government is undertaking various efforts to reduce cotton fiber imports. These include the People's Cotton Intensification Program (IKR), facilitating the provision of quality cotton seeds in collaboration with the Research Institute for Sugar and Fiber Crops (Balittas), facilitating accelerated cotton development programs, and Integrated Pest Management (IPM) for people's plantations.
