Unilever in the United States (US) and Canada is recalling 19 dry shampoo products manufactured before October 2021. The products are being recalled due to the presence of benzene, a cancer-causing substance. Benzene exposure can occur through inhalation, oral ingestion, and skin contact, potentially leading to cancer, including leukemia.
The majority of the recalled dry shampoos are Dove brand, totaling 8 products. There are 4 recalled TIGI (Bed Head/Rockaholic) products and 3 Tresemme products. Two Nexxus and two Suave dry shampoo products are also being recalled.
The following products are being recalled by Unilever US and Canada:
1. Dove Dry Shampoo Volume and Fullness
2. Dove Dry Shampoo Fresh Coconut
3. Dove Dry Shampoo Fresh and Floral
4. Dove Dry Shampoo Ultra Clean
5. Dove Dry Shampoo Invisible

Based on evaluations, daily exposure to the benzene levels in the recalled products is not expected to cause adverse health consequences. However, Unilever is recalling the products out of an abundance of caution for consumer safety.
Unilever claims that these products do not use benzene as a raw material; however, benzene traces may be present due to its natural occurrence in certain raw materials.
Unilever Indonesia management has stated that Indonesia is not included in this dry shampoo recall. The recalled products are dry shampoos, not liquid shampoos.
"We always operate with strict quality and safety standards and always comply with all regulations set by the Indonesian government," stated Unilever Indonesia management, as quoted by Katadata.co.id on Thursday, October 27.
