Indonesia's Fish Production Primarily Distributed for Domestic Consumption

The 2021 Fisheries Company Statistics Report published by the Central Statistics Agency (BPS) shows that the volume of production from fishing companies last year reached 110,246 tons.

The distribution of this fish production was mostly for domestic consumption or fresh sales. This amounted to 92,366 tons, or 83.79% of the total volume of fish production from fishing companies.

Meanwhile, the volume of fresh fish sold for export was 14,477 tons, equivalent to 13.13% of the total fish production volume.

Furthermore, there was also fish production for processed raw materials totaling 2,252 tons (2.04%). The remaining fish production amounted to 1,151 tons (1.04%).

According to BPS, of the total volume of fish produced, companies mostly used trawls as fishing gear. Production volume reached 33,898 tons.

Based on the type of commodity, skipjack tuna, tuna, tongkol (a type of tuna), shrimp, and shark dominated the national fish production volume. Their respective volumes were 21,409 tons, 17,023 tons, 7,903 tons, 2,009 tons, and 308 tons.

In total, the production value of fishing companies in 2021 reached Rp2.36 trillion.

For information, there are 94 fishing companies spread across 18 provinces in Indonesia. DKI Jakarta recorded the highest number of fishing companies, reaching 27 companies or 28.72% of the total national companies.
